Clean Indoor Air Regulation

To protect, promote and improve the health of our community

In April 2007, the Madison County Board of Health enacted MCHR 700 – Clean Indoor Air Regulation. The regulation prohibits smoking in enclosed public spaces, such as restaurants, bars, and businesses; it also prohibits smoking in the workplace. Enforcement of the regulation began sixty days after enactment, on June 12, 2007. Businesses and workplaces that are not in compliance are subject to citations.

In April 2011, after a first reading at their December, 2010, meeting and a 30-day period for written public comment, the Board of Health approved amendments to MCHR 700 that broaden the definition of smoking to include hookahs and electronic cigarettes and that eliminate the exemption for retail tobacco stores.  The amended regulation continues to prohibit smoking in enclosed public places such as restaurants, bars, businesses; it also prohibits smoking in the workplace. Enforcement of the regulation begins 60 days after its enactment, on June 6, 2011.

The Indoor Air Regulation is available in its entirety here.
